Hope on the Horizon

Light…

In November I grieve the waning light and the shorter days.

In December I rejoice on the shortest day of the year, knowing that from that point on, the light increases, even though it is not evident for weeks. In the same way I think that during dark days of the soul, that sometimes the light is already increasing even though we cannot yet perceive it.

I turned the calendar page last night and was amazed to see the date: March 1st. The month that spring ‘officially’ arrives. The month that the clocks get sprung forward again. For weeks I have been hearing birdsong in the morning, even when the temperatures are well below zero. The birds and the plants have an implicit knowing of the new season at hand, even if I cannot sense it.

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the desert.…. (Is.43:19)
