A prayer on Father’s Day

Lord God, thank you for this season and all the beauty that surrounds us. Thank you for your love and your faithfulness to us. Thank you for designing us for relationship with you. Thank you that you are the Lord and that apart from you there is no other. Thank you that in you there is life, and life abundant!

Heavenly Father, we come to you on this day celebrating fathers. Lord, we thank you for those men who are, or who were, good fathers to us. Thank you for being a father to the fatherless, for being a generous Father who loves to shower your children with good gifts. You are the very definition of Love. Would you help all of us to understand this more and more? We thank you Lord, for the spiritual fathers we have had in our lives; those men who have shown us more of who You are, and have taught us your ways. We lift up our pastors who shepherd us spiritually and we ask for more of your power and strength to fill them in the role that they play.

We pray for those who are grieving the loss of their father on this day. We ask for a special peace and presence upon them. Please surround them with your comfort and care.

God, you know those of us here for whom the word “father” does not invoke warm and happy memories. You know the deep places inside of us that experienced hurt or rejection from our own dads that makes it difficult to relate to you in that way. Lord, for those who cannot see you as the good Father that you are because of brokenness in their own dads, we pray for healing for their hearts. We ask that your incredible love would bind up the broken places inside, the pieces of their hearts that were wounded, so that there might be forgiveness, and an understanding of the depth of your love for them. We pray that you might heal spirits that were wounded. We pray that your truth might cover their minds – the truth of your love, your gentleness, your kindness, your patience, your grace.

We lift up the suffering children everywhere who don’t have a father to protect them, to provide for them, to guide them, and to love them. We also pray right now for those children who have been taken from their families near the southern border in the US and who are apart from their moms and dads. We ask that you would surround them with your comfort. God, we pray against the lies that are being used to support this action. This is not your heart. You are for families. We pray against the injustice and the way that Scripture is being used to justify this action by those who profess to know you and your Word. We pray freedom into this situation. Freedom and truth. We pray that those children would be released and returned to their families.

Bring your peace to those who need your peace today. Bring your strength to those who need strength. Bring your light to those who walk in darkness.

Help us Lord, to walk in the way of love. Inspire us to be patient, kind, not envious, boastful or prideful, rude or self-seeking. Help us to not be easily offended, nor easily angered and to keep no record of wrongs. Give us the courage to rejoice in the truth, to always protect, always trust, always hope and always persevere.

Lord, you never fail us.

Thank you.
