The Holiness of the Mundane Moments

Sometimes I can get lost in all the wonderful blog posts about amazing people and the incredible things they are doing all over the world. Sometimes I catch a dose of {gulp, dare I say it} envy,  that God is using others to do big and miraculous things. Why not me?, I whine.

But God is.

He is using me. He is using you. If you have surrendered to His Love, and you daily listen for the still, small voice, then He is using you.

This morning I was reminded of some words that a friend spoke to me recently: “You need to be content where you are.”

I’ve been reminded recently by Ann V that “small is the new big.”

And this morning in my bookshelf, the book by Brother Lawrence caught my eye: The Practice of the Presence of God.

Yes. Yes, Lord.

I had forgotten about the simple idea that God is looking for those who will simply carry His Presence. Those who will, no matter what they are doing, remain in close communication with Him. Those who, while they are living the mundane moments, will glorify His name, and sing His praises.

In Brother Lawrence’s words:

The time of business does not with me differ from the time of prayer, and in the noise and clatter of my kitchen, while several persons are at the same time calling for different things, I possess God in as great tranquility as if I were upon my knees at the blessed sacrament.

He got it. He understood it. And he walked in it: carrying the Presence of God always. Always communing with the One who loves him. Seeking to stay in the Presence of God no matter what the circumstances were surrounding him. Noise, clatter, busy-ness… still he chose to stay so close to God that he was always aware of God. And it seems that in the midst of the stressful circumstances surrounding him, he was able to remain at peace, just resting in God.

Simple… yet so beautiful.

Isn’t this what God wants for us? Forget for a moment about everything you do. Think about what God thinks is important: to be.

I’m so thankful for this gentle reminder this morning that it isn’t about what I am doing for God… it’s about being with God. Being with Him and staying aware of His Presence in every circumstance and in so doing, realizing that in everything we do, the mundane can be transformed into a holy moment.

While I wash the sticky mess from the floors… I can choose to praise Him. While I pack the lunches for the millionth time… I can thank Him for His goodness. While I hang the laundry, or weed the garden, or while I painstakingly paint the trim of someone’s home…. I can choose to be aware of His continual presence and His love for me.

Jesus, thank you for this beautiful reminder of the simplicity of the Christian life and calling: to remain close to you. Would you help us turn our eyes from the big, from the large, from the amazing and help us focus on the small, on the lowly, on the mundane and realize that You are in that. Be with those who are feeling discouraged, Lord. Help them find the joy and holiness in the ‘daily mundane’.

For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; 27but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, 28and the lowly things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast….                                      1 Cor.1:26-29
